Each month, two DJs will take up a residency, shining a spotlight on the freshest, most influential and emerging sounds in electronic music.
BBC Radio 1 has announced Palms Trax, Shy One, Madam X, Paramida, Yung Singh and Orbital as the latest DJs to join BBC Radio 1’s Residency.
From Thursday 1st December, Radio 1’s Residency will continue on BBC Radio 1 and Radio 1 Dance with a brand new line-up for the winter.
Each month, two DJs will take up a residency, shining a spotlight on the freshest, most influential and emerging sounds in electronic music.
Listeners will be transported into the worlds of the biggest names in Dance music from across the international club scene in the weekly show.
The line-up for the months of December, January and February is as follows:
Palms Trax
Palms Trax is a producer and DJ based in Berlin. His sound shifts seamlessly between vintage house, esoteric disco and the various shades of a bubbling UK underground he has helped define. In 2021, he had a ten week residency at Phonox in London and has his own label called ‘CWPT’. He’s a Dekmantel favourite and his legendary extended sets there have become a firm fixture of the festival. He has just been shortlisted as DJ Mag DJ of year 2022.
Palms Trax says: “Radio 1 has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember, whether brightening up a school run or blasting out of my dad’s van when hurtling back from football practice. Never in my wildest dreams (and certainly not his) did I imagine I’d be the one on the other side being the soundtrack to someone else’s journey. I am beyond thrilled to be given the opportunity and hope to try and contribute something even remotely worthy of being on the station.”
Shy One
Mali Larrington-Nelson AKA Shy One has been exposed to and influenced by the full spectrum of sounds her hometown of London has birthed and nurtured over the years, but takes in a variety of music genres from hip-hop and jazz to house music and West London’s own broken beat movement. Her sounds were picked up by DJ Scratcha DVA who went on to release her debut LP, ‘Bedknobs and Boomkicks.’ Since this release, she’s gone onto perform at GALA, Glastonbury and tour New Zealand and Australia.
Shy One says: “Radio has been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember. Since I started DJing on pirate radio as a teenager, it has been an ambition of mine to share and spotlight all of the incredible different dance music, scenes and cultures that I grew up with on a national platform like Radio 1.”
Madam X
DJ, label manager and club impresario Madam X is one of the UK’s most dynamic DJs. Pushing the sounds of leftfield bass-driven techno, her KAIZEN record label and club night has garnered itself as one of the leading, forward-thinking imprints flying the flag for dark, percussion-fuelled, UK rave music. Madam X is also the head of her own label, ‘Kaizen’ which supports up and coming producers and has had support from Mall Grab, Hodge, Mary Ann Hobbs and Loefah.
Madam X says: “Radio 1 was my gateway into Dance and UK Club music. From the golden years of Mary Ann Hobbs to the ‘In New DJs We Trust’ days, I remember religiously listening to the station in my early teen year as it transported me out of my bedroom and into the club. To be given an opportunity like this is a real badge of honour. I’ll be paying homage to the rave music I grew up on, as well as celebrating the labels and artists pushing the boundaries and keeping the Underground Clubbing communities alive.”
Paramida
Since landing in Berlin in 2010, Paramida has made her impact on the local club scene with a distinctive and sensual approach to music. The Panorama Bar resident blends proto-house to trance with high-energy techno. Over the last couple of years, Paramida has released her EPs ‘Dream Ritual’ and “Moonrise VII” on her own highly respected label ‘ Love on the Rocks’ and collaborated with Massimiliano Pagliara for Ostgut Ton’s anniversary compilation.
Paramida says: “I’m beyond excited to join the legendary BBC Radio 1’s Residency. It’s an honour to contribute my world of music to what is considered a hallmark channel. Expect the unexpected. Detours, obscurities, endless grooves with a pinch of my classics.”
Yung Singh
Yung Singh is one of the most exciting DJs on the Global Circuit having won DJ Mag’s ‘Breakthrough DJ of the Year’ in 2021. His sets help to re-energise the British Punjabi and South Asian music scene with his sounds varying from Garage, UK Funky to Grime, Jungle and DnB mixed with Punjabi Folk to sweet nostalgic Trance or Hip-Hop.
Yung Singh says: “I’m super excited to be given the chance to join the esteemed BBC Radio 1’s Residency. It’s a real privilege to be given an opportunity to bring the sounds and stories I hold so dearly to such a wide audience and platform.”
Orbital
Orbital are two brothers Phil and Paul Hartnoll who have created a vast catalogue of ambitious yet accessible electronic music, informed by a wide range of genres such as ambient, electro, punk and film scores. True pioneers of electronic music, they were one of the biggest names in music during the mid-90s, reinventing the notion of what a dance act could do live, and remain hugely influential. They are now working on their tenth studio album, set for release in 2023.
Orbital says: “We mostly heard about new and exciting music from DJs like John Peel and Pete Tong who were supporting the electronic dance music scene. Radio 1 was the only national station doing it at the time. So we are super-excited now, after all these years to be part of the Residency radio show. We are going to be diving deep into our record collection and playing you the music we loved that helped forge Orbital, from all those years ago to present day.”
