How To Put Together Your First DJ Set-Up – Free Beginner Tutorial

This is a FREE sample lesson from our “DJing Made Easy” course – find out more here: http://djtips.co/djing-sample

Here we’ll cover what you need to get started DJing straight away – the basics in case you’ve never DJed before. I’ll list down the gear you need and also what you need to do with that gear so you can start spinning and learning along with me. If you’ve already got DJ gear and you’re happy with it, you can skip this lesson.

What you’ll need

So first up let’s talk about what you’ll need: first is a DJ controller and there are many great controllers to choose from, as you’ll see in the lesson. I’ll be using a range of great basic controllers throughout this course, just so you know – any of them will do!

Next up is DJ software. There are four big DJ apps now: Serato DJ, Rekordbox DJ, Virtual DJ, and Traktor. The software you use will depend on the controller you have, and your controller will have a software licence in the box. Nowadays you often get the “full” software, but you may get “lite” software that you’ll want to pay to upgrade and unlock more features at some point.

Next you’ll need a laptop: this is where you’re going to be installing your DJ software, organising your music and making playlists, and of course you’ll be using it to spin alongside your controller. A Windows PC or a Mac is fine – in fact I alternate between a PC and a Mac throughout this course.

Next you’ll need a speaker or speakers, with an RCA or Aux input. You can even use a Bluetooth speaker as long as it’s got an Aux input (using Bluetooth to DJ is not good enough because there’s a tiny delay between what’s coming out of your DJ software and what’s coming out of the Bluetooth speaker). So just make sure that you’re able to use a wired connection.

Next you’ll need a pair of headphones. DJ headphones are recommended because they generally produce more low end frequencies and tend to isolate the outside world well. so you can hear your beats better. Your smartphone earbuds or frankly anything else can work in a pinch, too, but do trade up to DJ headphones as soon as you can.

Finally, you’ll need music – these are MP3s that you’ve bought or downloaded throughout the years and you probably already have loads knocking around your hard drive. We cover where to download and buy music in the next module. If your software lets you use a streaming music service you can use that too, although as we’ll see, you should still plan to buy and own your most important music,

Setting your gear up

First up, install the software on your computer. This is pretty straightforward – you’ll be able to download your DJ controller’s software of choice online.

Next you need to plug your controller in to your laptop.

Next plug in your speakers and headphones.

And that’s it! DJ gear and software are pretty quick and easy to set up these days.
